EDM Challenge #124 - Draw something yellow

I think this bucket must be the only yellow item in my house but I thought it was worthy of the challenge. This was the first time I've experimented with watercolour crayons - purchased today - and I love them!! Admittedly, my sketchbook is the cheap and nasty kind so doesn't take too well to watercolour techniques but it's okay for practice. It's certainly VERY different to working on canvas or wood with my regular acrylics but I'm enjoying the learning process.

  1. GREAT JOB on this bucket! Shading and highlights! And I love your journal entry! WE too are in the same situation ... worrisome and sure makes you realize WHICH of your garden plants are hardy enough to produce despite the lack of water!

  4. Hi Serena -- A great bucket! The shadows are very nice and add to the "dignity" of this pail...I really like it. I see that you're owned by a dog too, they really add to life, don't they? I flipped through several of your recent pages - such wonderful work, I'm envious. - Barbara

  5. This is really good Serena. I to have had a problem finding anything yellow in the house. I've already drawn a lemon so don't want to do that again. Hmmm. I really like the light on the bucket. Very good indeed. Watercolour crayons??! Never even heard of them.

  6. Thanks everyone for your much appreciated comments. :)

I agree, Lin. Drought is no fun at all and we certainly do learn ways to conserve as much water as we can.

Stapeliad - I plan to try the water-soluble graphite pencils also. I've been told recently that Matisse are releasing them into their range soon. Can't wait!

Barbara - There is never a dull moment with Cody around. lol Thank you, I enjoy visiting your blog also.

Andrea - I hadn't heard of them either until I went to buy some watercolour pencils yesterday and the salesperson/artist showed me the watercolour crayons which she uses herself. They are fabulous to work with and I'm looking forward to using them on better quality paper.

  8. I'm impressed Serena! Can't handle w/colour crayons at all. You've really caught the shiny surface too. Heard about the drought in areas (all?) of Australia - it doesn't sound like it's going to change anytime soon - is that right?

  9. Thanks, Joan! :)

Thanks, Sarah! I leave the crayons in the box and just use a wet brush to pick up the colour I need. Our drought situation is very grim right now and the State government is talking about bringing in Level 6 water restrictions in the near future. We desperately need rain to fall in our catchment areas.

  10. Great job on the bucket! A new medium becomes an experiment and so fun. Nice looking shadow. We are also in a drought, although not severe. I have always put buckets under our downspouts to collect for the garden. What I really want to do is put in a cistern. It's on the wish list.

  11. It's a really nice bucket, and I'm sorry you have to use it for such a troubling reason. We were pretty dry here in the spring, but have had some rain lately. Not enough, I'm sure.

Watercolor crayons are great, aren't they? I have the 12 pack of Staedtler, and a few derwent Aquatones.

  12. This is great. We have had bad drought, too, and are under water restrictions as well.

  13. Hi Serena,
I'm thoroughly enjoying your drawings. I love the added story that you've written next to your yellow bucket and I'm sorry that you're still going through that drought situation. I hope that changes soon and you get a reprieve. Keep up the excellent work on your drawings....Ro

  14. Thanks, Ro....glad you're enjoying the drawings. :)

We did get some rain over the past couple of days but not enough to make a difference to our dams unfortunately. A lot of people have been installing water tanks as well as drilling for bores.
