EDM Challenges #120 & #121

I decided to give my Micron Pigma .05 pen a try out for the first time this afternoon. These were just a couple of quick sketches to get the feel for the pen and to also get a couple more challenges under my belt. I must admit that I prefer working with charcoal or graphite so much more as I love the extent of shading and detail I can achieve with them. I find the pen is much more limiting in that area but, then again, maybe I just need a lot more practise with it. This was only my first try after all.

  2. Good work on these challenges, using only a pen is frightening and you achieved tons of depth and value - nice blog and thanks for commenting on mine too.

  3. These are great Serena!! I love the depth you achieved with the stack of coins and also the hatching & details in the torch sketch. I think it's very freeing not to use an eraser sometimes as the sketches end up being more spontaneous don't you think? Anyhow, you've got a super start with these microns!

  5. Thanks for making them larger!
Well I tihnk you made an excellent job of those coins - just the right amount of detail. I say this with particular feeling as I made an attempt at coins today that was dismal.

You made a very good job of that torch too. And you are working with a different medium from usual.

  6. Lovely job Serena - I think you've done a more than excellent job, you'd never know this was your first time with that medium. The pigma is my favorite pen. Of course, I don't do alot of shading with it. I always wish I could use a pen like France Belleville or Tommy Kane, but I'm hopeless in that department. I'm with you on the graphite for shading. The pigma is great for line work tho - and I love the control it gives and the really fine lines. It plays well with others too so don't be afraid to mix it up with some pencils or watercolor if you like. I love the sketch of your moving boxes by the way - it's such a serence drawing even tho I know that moving is anything but!

  7. Thank you everyone for your encouraging comments. Much appreciated.

Laura - I do agree that there was less pressure working with the pen and it made me take on a more loose approach which was kinda fun. Perhaps though, it was more to do with my limited knowledge on how to actually shade with the pen. lol

Juj - I plan to try some coloured pencils and pen next time around. Thanks for the compliment on my Organised Chaos sketch too. I've added a few more boxes since then but it's still just the tip of the iceberg. lol

  10. You're handling that pen really nicely. If you're wanting to venure even further in to the world of ink drawing, I highly recommend speedball dip pens. I LOVE LOVE LOVE them. You can control the stroke thickness and they're just so nice to work with. Careful of ink blobs though.

  12. Great job, Serena! Those coins really look good in the pen. I just bought myself a set and have yet to try them out. Today is the day! We'll see how it goes.
