Beachscape - Work In Progress - Stage Two

I worked some more on the waves and I have to fight myself not to do anymore as, being a detail painter, it's very hard for me to keep landscapes/beachscapes loose. They are definitely not my forte. I'll now focus on the foreground elements. This is going to be a challenge for me too as the painting is a 'landscape' shape whereas the reference pic is 'portrait' shape. Once I add the kids, I'm going to be left with a lot of blank space in the foreground.......not sure if that will work. Being self-taught, I'm sadly lacking in the composition department so any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

  2. You added some great depth to the waves - they look really good! I wonder if perhaps a lone child in the foreground, off to the side, with a bucket, might set off the children you will be putting in the waves?

  3. Thank you, kml. My kids will actually be in the exact spot you mentioned but I just wasn't sure if that would be enough?

  5. Hi Serena,
This seascape is looking great! Can't wait to see the kids in there :) How many figures will there be?

  6. Only three of my kids are showing in my reference photo so I'll start with that many and then decide from there if more people are needed.

  7. I love the simplicity of it as it is, actually. Love the colors you used for the ocean as it recedes and the waves are done so well. I can't draw people like you can--I'd probably just put a little bird walking the edge of the water. This is really beautiful, Serena!
    Always, Rita

  8. Thanks for your great input, Rita. :) I hope to get back to the seascape soon but, for now, I have a couple of other projects I need to get out of the way first.

  9. Your work is so amazing! I can totally relate to how hard it is to do landscapes as someone who loves details. As far as composition goes, I felt that was a real weakness for me and recently found a book that's really helped me understand it better. It's called The Simple Secret to Better Painting.
