Stop the Whale Slaughter

Today, Japan launched its whaling fleet to the Southern Ocean Sanctuary around Antarctica where it plans to kill more than 1000 whales over several months under the guise of 'scientific research'. You don't need to kill whales to research them! How stupid do they think we are?! They plan to kill 50 threatened humpback whales, 50 endangered fin whales and around 930 minke whales. I am so upset and outraged at this news. It has been condemned internationally and even the International Whaling Commission has called for an end to the killing of whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary but yet, Japan persists. The Greenpeace ship, Esperanza, is just off the coast of Japan with plans to follow the whaling fleet and, no doubt, try to stop the senseless slaughter. Click here to keep up to date via the Esperanza crew's blog. Visit Greenpeace International to find out how you can help.

  1. Thanks for sharing Serena! It is a tragedy and I'm glad you are making people aware of the injustices. This is a great drawing of the whale tail.

  3. Oh no, this makes my stomach sick. Why in the world do they need to slaughter them to research them??? I mean, come on, they must think we are as dumb as rocks.

  5. Beautiful drawing Serena. I love to see a drawing like this as you see it a lot in photography but rarely in art. Maybe us artists are gradually catching on.

The killing, what in the world could they possibly want with so many? You would think at most one each would be plenty. You other scientists testing all the time without harming whales. Very strange.

  6. Thank you, Boyd.....the thought that so many of these gentle giants are going to be slaughtered is so devastating to me. They clearly have other plans for these whales and it's not research. I'm praying that something can be done to stop it.

  14. Hi Serena. i still can't believe this things happen noawdays with whales and other species. I always think if humans used their potential only to do good things, but it's all the contrary.

  21. Great drawing! I don't see why anyone would want to make another living being suffer. I have lived with pets all my life and donate to the World Wildlife Fund monthly. Some people will never get that we are all one and that every form of life deserves respect...

  22. Thanks, Ella! That's exactly how I view things too. :)

  24. Serena, this is just gorgeous, as are these beautiful creatures. I am so sad and incensed that the Japanese did this. You can always tell the true character of someone by how they treat the weak and defenseless. Why can't they just be satisfied with enjoying the beauty? You should make cards, sell these and donate the proceeds to a whale fund or something.
