MONDAY PHOTO-A-WEEK

kookaburras quite often make nests in large termite mounds that can be found high up in trees. it just so happens that we have one of these termite mounds in the tree right behind our back fence and, each morning, i've been watching this kookaburra going in and out of the nest/termite mound. as far as i know, kookaburras usually nest in september which is our spring so maybe it is just setting up house for now.

kookaburras are native to australia and are the largest bird in the kingfisher family. they are one of my top three favourite birds.....the other two being fairy wrens and the pelicans.

  4. Neat, Seerena. I remember the kookaburra song from when I was a kid, but I've never seen a kookaburra, even a picture.

BTW, part of the flute melody in the Men at Work song "Down Under" was inspired by the kookaburra song. Little bit of trivia. And now I'm dating myself. So...

  9. Great shots. Love the one Aaron got of it. I love Kookaburra's too. Do you remember the one who use to eat Brandy's dog biscuits at or old house?

    I've always loved that painting.

  13. Hi Serena,
Oh dear, I'd be worried about those termites coming to close to my house.

Great photo's of the Kookaburra and also the one taken by Aaron.
He must be patient waiting for the Kookaburra to leave his dinner to take that photo.

I've admired your Kookaburra painting before. Just wonderful.
    Hugs,
    Anna

  14. Thank you all so much for your wonderful comments.

Anna, thankfully, this variety of termite are not a threat to homes.

Vee, as far as i know, the termites deserted the nest a long time ago....or maybe the birds feasted on them.

Tim, thanks for that piece of trivia...I didn't know that.
