MONDAY PHOTO-A-WEEK - BUTTONS

I found the following description on Wikipedia at this link -

Buttons - In clothing and fashion design, a button is a small disc, typically round, object usually attached to an article of clothing in order to secure an opening, or for ornamentation. Functional buttons work by slipping the button through a fabric or thread loop, or by sliding the button through a reinforced slit called a buttonhole.

Buttons may be manufactured from an extremely wide range of materials, including natural materials such as antler, bone, horn, ivory, shell, vegetable ivory, and wood; or synthetics such as celluloid, glass, metal, bakelite and plastic.

Hard plastic is by far the most common material for newly manufactured buttons; the other materials tend to occur only in premium apparel.

There exists a phobia of buttons, called koumpounophobia.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Who knew there is actually a phobia of buttons???!!!

Anywhoo, as I put my thoughts into the theme for this week, I got to thinking of buttons as a type of analogy.

How they hold things together which is similar to how we try to hold our lives together sometimes.

When a button breaks off we sew it back into place like we often pick up the pieces of our own lives and put them back into place.

When a button gets lost, we find another to sew in its place like when we feel loss in our own lives, we gradually heal and find closure. With time, our human nature helps us to find something else to love or take an interest in and we move on with our lives.

Sometimes, buttons get lost or broken and we don't bother to fix or replace them and the garment is not worn again.....put aside for a time when we choose to mend it. Some people never completely heal or find closure after loss and they go around with a part of their hearts not mended due to their deep sorrow.

I wish for those people to find peace and closure through love, light and the joy of living. May they reach out to others in their time of despair and may they allow others to help them through it.

Love, light and peace

  4. You must have meant that MOST people sew a button back on that comes off. Not me. I either wear whatever it is with no button or I use a safety pin. Pretty pathetic, I know! It's not like I don't know how to sew. My only excuse is I hate to mend anything and buttons fall under that category. I just hope my buttons have the good sense to stay put, otherwise they get put in the button jar, never to be used again!

    Hope your week is wonderful.

    Hugs,

  8. hahah.... that is funny... button phobia... they must be the people that don't want to have any of the problems associated with buttons in the analogy... maybe they have the right idea after all.....

I'm usually sewing them on right away if I see one missing, or dangling... but, that's always my way... trying to fix things or give advice (mostly unsolicited) about everything...

  9. hmm one of the odder phobias I've heard of, but people can be scared of so many things (i don't get the snake phobia, but people can be so terrified of them)

this is a really lovely written blog post :)

  15. Oh, so beautiful, Serena. It read almost like a kind of wistful prayer in a way... that sepia version of the photo is so lovely and warm. You are such a deep soul... even when dealing with something as seemingly simple as buttons. :)

  19. Wow Serena...I love the analogy here about buttons and life. Very cool to think about. And have to giggle about having a button phobia...but I guess it's not funny if you suffer from it! Take care!

  20. Oh I love your post Serena and your analogy of buttons and life is so true. I think buttons are a comfort to many of us. This sentence hit home with me "Some people never completely heal or find closure after loss and they go around with a part of their hearts not mended due to their deep sorrow." I think I fit into that category.
