A trip to Berrinba Wetlands

Yesterday was a fabulous day so Aaron, Brad and I went for a walk through the Berrinba Wetlands. We've actually been there a few times over the past few weeks so the following photos are made up from more than a day's visit.  This beautiful spot is only a four minute drive from our house.

Surprisingly, the Berrinba Wetlands are man-made and were created by sand and mining operations after World War II.  It has pretty much been left untouched since the 90's although there has been selective work done to make it as natural a habitat as possible.  There is now 80 hectares of natural beauty and it's protected so the wildlife can flourish and enjoy their habitat in safety.

There are picnic and barbecue areas around the outskirts and there is an information centre which has interactive LCD screens.

I was over the moon the first time we visited the wetlands as I discovered there are pelicans living there!!!
I LOVE PELICANS!!
Btw, those are turtles, not rocks, sitting beside the pelicans on the sandbar.

There are concrete walking paths and pedestrian bridges through certain areas.
They also have concrete benches along the walking trails so people can rest and take in the views.
Here, Aaron rests with Jack.

One of my favourite spots at the Wetlands is this stone circle...man-made yes, but it feels magical to me.
We sit and rest here on every visit.

My little Cody monster has a lot of fur and these hot days can take their toll, especially when we go for walks, so he enjoys the rest at the stone circle too.

I was happy to spot some magnificent specimens of Banksias along the way too. I think these may be of the Banksia Roburs variety but not 100% sure.  They look almost black with their seeds still in tact.

We had a great time and it felt good to get out of the house as I haven't felt the best lately.  Unfortunately, I'm still dealing with a lot of head, neck and shoulder pain, however, our trip to the wetlands certainly made me feel much better.

What did you do this weekend? Feel free to share in the comments.

  1. Maybe your forlorn little bird pair who lost their tree made a new home over here? That's a nice thought.

Looks like a great place to visit. I love the circle of stones, too! Cody looked like he needed a little break. As we get colder here, you get hotter there.

Those flowers reminded me of a round hair brush with very dense bristles--hehe!

Glad you enjoyed the visits over there and I hope they continue to make you feel better. Maybe that magical stone circle is doing its healing on you? ;)

I'm glad your outing made you feel better--I get alot of sinusey type headaches this time of year, and it seems to help me too--just to get out.

  3. It all looks so beautiful and to have that so close to home is amazing. Isn't it nice when something man made turns out to be good for the environment? Great photos of your son and those adorable little puppies! Looks like a great day was had by all!
    Happy Sunday to you all....

  4. How lucky you are to have such a great place to visit so close to home. I do love being outdoors. But I also do like being inside, crocheting the hours away. Now that the weather is getting milder here, we will be able to be outdoors more. Hope you are having a great day! :) Tammy

  11. Serena I am so happy that you have the beautiful wetlands to visit & they are close by. Especially since they took the trees from behind your house. We are losing some trees here in the name of "progress". Places where nature takes over are to be to cherished.

  17. Beautiful pictures, Serena! After looking at the pelicans, I had to look up the Australian pelican to get a closer look, and they're lovely. I can see why you'd like them.

I must wonder what that stone circle will be like a couple of hundred years from now. Perhaps it is partly the passage of time that builds up the feeling of "sacred" that we experience in stone circles?

So glad you could get out and enjoy. Living with pain is so debilitating and frustrating, and I'm so sorry to hear you are still suffering. Sending you my best wishes for a full and speedy recovery, Serena.
