this is an australian paperbark tree. it is native to australia and is a member of the melaleuca family. i love the papery bark and i think it would work well in mixed media collages.

  1. You don't like it? (My jaw is on the ground) I think it's turned out beautiful - the black outline detail is just fantastic, I think it makes it unique and really interesting to look at. Hope you are feeling better today dear :) x

  2. Oh, I agree with Jenny! I love it! And it looks like you picked a journal that you can fill up with mandalas!! It's really just extra fancy doodling. I'm sure you'll like some more than others.

I am fascinated by that paperbark tree! I'd love to see you put some of it in a collage!

I hope you got to watch Part 2...and that you are feeling better today. Love and hugs, my friend! :):)

  4. Your mandala is coming on nicely and I like the way you draw on it with ink.
The tree is magnificent, you should definitely find a use for it.

  5. I think this is beautiful! So funny that we sometimes see our art so differently from what others see. I love the quality of your photos - what kind of camera are you using?

  8. Hi Serena, this mandala is beautiful and vibrant. Thank you for sharing the different stages of your work, I feel less intimidated by your end result knowing how you got there.
I have also wondered about paperbark before and thought the smooth surface might be lovely to paint on, but haven't got to experiment yet.
I look forward to checking back in to see what you're up to =)

  10. I love that you show the step-by-step process of how you made this mandala. The little color swatches are great too.

I like the way it looks, but even if you aren't that into it, the process of making the mandala is at least as important as the final product!

  15. I'm getting the impression that you're outvoted on the mandala, but just in case I'll also say that I like it :)

Love the tree. We have birch trees which give very fine layers of bark that can be used in artwork quite easily.

  16. Hi Serena,
I love your Mandala! Don't know why YOU don't like it. :(
I love that bark on that tree. It would be great to use in mixed -media art. I could probably even make a doll from it. :)

  18. You were thinking it would turn out differently than it did, I suspect, and it emerged like this anyway. I love it, too, as do the majority of your commenters. But that paper tree? Amazing!

  20. Sorry to hear you are feeling poorly. Rest and recuperate.
I love the end result of your mandala. Great idea to do your colour palette samples on your page for future reference. I always say I will do this then get so caught up in the painting that I forget. Yes, I am a scatterbrain sometimes.
The paperbark is one of my favourite trees and I think it would look fantastic in a mixed media. So much yummy texture
