Scribble Picnic - Tie It Up

Hello friends,

I'm running late but I had a good excuse — explained later.

As hard as it would have been, I very nearly let this Scribble Picnic pass without doing anything. I went off to bed very tired after a long day but — an image came to mind and I just had to do a very rough scribble of it — straight from my imagination. I'm so glad I managed to do something after all. Obviously, lots of refining is needed as the rectangular shapes on the roof-racks will be turned into suitcases...but I think the idea is cute and will look better with ink and some watercolour.

The theme for this week was 'TIE IT UP' but for some unknown reason, my tired brain was thinking 'TIE IT DOWN'. Both can pass for the same, I guess.

After making sure all their belongings were securely 'tied down/up' on the roof-racks, these two besties were off on an adventure to the big city — a new life awaited. How exciting!

I had a bit of an adventure myself yesterday when my two sons and I decided to take a trip to The Spit, Main Beach at the Gold Coast to capture some photos of the sunrise. We woke up at 1:30 AM to get organised and were off on our adventure by 3 AM. It takes just over an hour to get there. It was dark and cold when we first arrived being that we have only just started spring.  I was so grateful that Aaron had packed some blankets for us. Plus I had taken some Thermo mugs filled with hot coffee. It was heaven!

So here is the sunrise in sequence, taken with my Samsung Galaxy Note 5.

I was so excited to see a couple of pelicans on the beach so naturally I had to get a pic of one

Isn't he/she beautiful?! I adore pelicans! There were lots of seagulls about too waiting at the waters edge as the tide moved in.

We had a beautiful, fun morning! I was a little worried that the fine, dry Aussie sand would have caused my hip and back to flare up but, while I experienced a little pain later, it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. The physiotherapy must be helping. YAY!  Walking in soft, fine sand can be very hard on the legs and hip, particularly uphill, and especially when you're not used to it.

While the sand looks dark and reddish in this pic, it's purely from the glow of the sunrise, as the sand is actually a white-grey colour in the dry sandy parts of the beach.

We will definitely do that trip again. Needless to say, after a spectacular start to the day, the lack of sleep caught up with me by evening so I went off to bed around 9 PM — and did my Scribble Picnic sketch too before lights out.

I hope you all enjoy a beautiful week!

  2. Hi Serena :) The photos are BEAUTIFUL! How lucky that you saw a pelican, I've never seen one in person before!! :) Your drawing is fantastic...we've been watching all of the Looney Tunes shorts from the 1930's through to the 1960's and it reminded me of that! Well done! :)

    1. Thanks! I have seen lots of pelicans in person and I absolutely adore them! I haven't seen Looney Tunes in many years but I do remember loving them as a child.

  5. I hope your back/hip continues to feel better. I think walking with one leg lower and the other higher can create discomfort, a slanted beach.

Your sketch is quit fun. I wonder how their adventure will go, maybe a bit like yours?

    1. Thanks, Tammie. My back and hip are still giving me trouble but I guess it will take time for my hip to recover. My back will only get worse, unfortunately.

It seems my pain issues are up and down but I was glad my hip didn't act up after the beach trip.

  7. Wow, that is so pretty. Glad you added pics here too. Amazing and so great you do these sort of adventures with your sons even now. I love that. Love the write up and love the sketch too.So adorable. Perfect actually. I think it fits tie it up jsut fine, dear Serena. So glad you got this in and even took our picnic to somewhere so exotic for us...well for those of us landlocked in places like Colorado! :)

I've posted my colour version now btw and will be changing out the themes either tonight or tomorrow, so stay tuned! :)

    1. Thanks, Michael...I'm glad you liked my little sketch for the theme. I was pleased with it.

Last time we did that same trip, in the wee hours, was back in January 2016 and I'm sure we will do it again...maybe not so long in-between next time. Having lived in the Rocky Mountain plateaus in Wyoming, 7000 feet above sea level, I know your scenery is breathtaking from a different point of view...I was gobsmacked by the mountain scenery when we lived in Wyoming. Never got to travel to Colorado but we did see parts of Idaho and Utah. LOVED Bear Lake! I think I'm definitely a water gal.

I left a comment about your coloured version on your blog...loved it!

    1. Thanks, Paula. I was thrilled to see some pelicans at the beach. This one let me get up quite close too.

I seem to have take a step back pain-wise with my hip but I do hope it will eventually heal. :(

  9. Sounds like you had a fun morning. Walking on any kind of beach - be it sandy or shingled - is hard on the legs and hips after a while, especially up hill.

  10. I stayed on the Gold Coast at Broad Beach when in Queensland Serena- perhaps not too far from where you experienced such an awesome sunrise. Your photos are fabulous and the black/white pelican is so handsome. I love them too but have never been lucky enough to get a photo of one actually on a beach, they are usually standing on a boat dock post or flying by in long lines over the water looking for lunch, and on our coast they are brown pelicans so rather plain looking.

I like your sketch for the theme this week - great idea.
    Continue to heal, happy days.

Broadbeach is a few beaches south of Main Beach (The Spit)...not far at all by car. Yes, I felt lucky to get a photo of the pelican at the beach. I was in my element as they are one of my favourite birds. There were none on the beach the last time we made our 'wee hours' trip to The Spit.

Thanks for your well wishes...I'm up and down pain-wise.

  11. I love your sketch - tied up or down it's adorable. Thanks for sharing your sunrise experience. The photos are lovely and I'm loving that pelican. I have trouble walking in the sand also because of my back. But the rewards of experiencing nature usually surpass the pain. Keep up the good work with the physio.

    2. By the way, sorry to hear you also have back issues. It's not a nice thing to endure but we can't let it stop us enjoying life. I'm hoping the physio will be effective for the hip.
