Scribble Picnic - Finland

Hi everyone,

This is a crazy time of year for me as I'm sure it is for many of you so, needless to say, I'm late with my entry this week for Scribble Picnic.

Michael chose the theme - Finland/Scandinavian. I did a little research and discovered the Finland invented the Sauna as well as Ice-skates...who knew? Well I knew they were big into saunas as my brother-in-law was Finnish. My neighbours in a previous house were also Finnish and they had a sauna specially built as an add-on to their home. I was going to go with sketching ice-skates but opted for Finland's National flower instead - Lily of the Valley.

This was done with a mix of graphite, Prismacolor pencils, and watercolours...even a wee touch of black ink too.  I sketched it in a Strathmore Tan-toned sketchbook.

Next week, the theme is DREDEL/SPINNING TOP/TEETOTUM...that will be an interesting one! Why not come along and join us?

I hope you've all been enjoying a lovely week. My son and I have been busy with choir practise for our upcoming performance at one of our major hospitals. This is our fourth year participating in the hospital choir. SO much fun!

Have a lovely week!

  1. I really relate to this Lilly of the Valley as it is the Birthday flower for the month of May. My month.

    1. Thanks, Pam. I think the highlight for me each week is seeing how everyone else interprets the different themes also.

  4. You are not late. As long as it is in before the sign up is closed, then you are right on time.
Your flowers are charming. I wish I could smell them. I was looking at a map of US state flowers and was surprised to see that a number of states share the same flower. I would have thought that each state would have it's own.

    1. Thanks! Technically, I am late because I posted mine on Thursday morning here in Australia whereas Michael posts the prompts for a Wednesday according to the US time zones. So the Linky gadget closes there on a Wednesday but it's actually a Thursday here which is why I always feel a tad guilty when I post late here. I get extra time to play with thanks to time zones. :)

With all the varieties of flowers there are, you would think that each US state would be able to have their own state flower.

    1. Thanks, Alexandra! xx I always feel a little guilty posting on a Thursday here because the gadget closes on a Wednesday in the States. Time zones work in my favour and I get extra time to play with. Most times I post on the Wednesday here though. It can get confusing...hehe

  7. I have a huge patch of Lilly of the Valley in my yard. They are so beautiful and hardy ... it doesn't surprise me that they are the national flower of Finland. Your drawing is a perfect rendition of the real thing and I am impressed with the way you mix your medium. It seems to work wonders :)

  12. We used to grow these in my childhood garden in England - always a favorite for their precious fragrance - but I didn't know they were Finland's national flower, how lovely.
You've really made them pop here Serena - love the shades of green, their leaves are always beautiful.

    1. Thanks, Mary. I didn't know they were the national flower of Finland either until I researched for the prompt. I have never been lucky enough to enjoy their scent in real life.

  13. this is so well done, Serena. So dainty and pretty and I had no idea about this being their national flower! Wow. Wonderful! Ha, yes, knew they had more saunas but didn't realise they invented that too. Smart of them though, with all that cold! I'd want plenty of Saunas too and an excuse to get outside when dark so much of the day as one moved further North into Lapland etc. A great interpretation for the week and fun reading your comments a week later.

You can sing too? Bravo. So wish I could do that.Ha, I think I;d be bet in mortuary--maybe I;d wake up the freshly dead corpses!
