AEDM - Day 30 - Succulent

Hi everyone,

We made it to the final day of Art Every Day Month! I'm so happy that I managed to post every day. I'd like to thank Leah for hosting this wonderful challenge for November each year. It has been so nice to be a part of this community of amazing women! I hope we will continue to catch up via each others' blogs.

I sketched a Succulent for the final day.

First a rough pencil sketch.

Followed by watercolours and black ink pen

Each and every comment is greatly appreciated.
It has been an absolute pleasure to visit you all too.

Where to now?

My gardenia shrub is flowering.
So a couple of gardenia pics to end this post for November.

Their perfume is amazing!

Thanks again to all my fellow AEDM participants!

AEDM - Day 29 - Older sketches

Hi everyone,

We are at the start of a heatwave this week so I think the new air-conditioning will be getting a workout in the days ahead.

Today, (two of my sons) Beau, Brad, and I visited my 85 year old Mum. I usually take a hot lunch and today it was vegan pies/pasties and hot chips/fries. Afterwards, we all played Yahtzee, one of Mum's favourite games and then we sat in the lounge-room and chatted over a cuppa.

It's been a big day and I can't stop yawning. I wasn't up to sketching but I thought I'd share some photos of some of my older sketches.

I sketched this one for an art prompt - Spicy - back in 2018.
A flavour of Mexico and it just had to be a chihuahua, right?

A Siamese Fighting fish aka Betta fish
sketched for INKtober 2017 using only inks

A rabbit sketched on tan-toned paper for INKtober 2017
using pen and inks

A black swan sketched on grey-toned paper for INKtober 2017,
also in pen and inks

An Aussie Magpie sketched on grey-toned paper
for INKtober 2017 - black and white inks.

And some people I sketched in watercolours
for Sktchy - an art community I belong to.
These were done back in 2016.

The last day of AEDM is tomorrow.
It sure came around fast.
See you then.

AEDM - Day 28 - Fish and Flowers

Hi everyone,

We had a fun night at cards and I did win a few rounds. YAY! I crawled into bed around just after 2am and was back up again at 4:30am. Needless to say I'm feeling very tired and zombie-like right now (8:30pm) so it will be a photo post today.

My Desert Rose (Adenium Obesum) is in bloom so thought you might like to see some pics. I'm a big fan of succulents and this beauty is around 13 years old. It started out as a small cutting from my Mum's Desert Rose. After nearly three years, it barely grew at all and never flowered to the point where I nearly gave up on it.

Then the following year, it just took off and look at it now!

Its bulbous belly has fattened up quite a lot over the years.

In January last year, Aaron (son) set up a fish pond under our pergola

You can't see it in the pic but there is an aerator (bubbler) in the pond.

He bought 1 Shubunkin Goldfish and 2 Oranda Goldfish to live there.

They have grown quite a bit since then.
I took the following photos a couple of weeks ago.

The Shubunkin is the darker one with black markings

When they see me coming with their food each day,
they gather at the edge of the pond
with their mouths open.

It's really hard to get decent photos of them as they are
constantly moving plus the water is very reflective.

AEDM - Day 27 - Pina Colada

 Hi everyone,

It's cards night at my sister's place tonight
and that means Pina Colada cocktails! YUM!

We only have a couple of these delicious cocktails early on in the evening
so the alcohol is well and truly out of my system by the time we head home,
usually between 1am and 2am.

So that's what I sketched for AEDM today.

I'm sure you all remember the song called Escape?
It became known more as The Pina Colada Song.

It's a story of a couple who were both tired of their relationship,
and decided to look elsewhere, only to discover
that they were meant for each other.

WOW!! Only 3 days to go!

See you tomorrow...

I'm feeling a lot better.
Thanks for all the well wishes.

I did manage to finish the Puffin today.

AEDM - Day 24 - More on Kya

Hi everyone,

I was hoping to work on the Puffin for posting today but I came down with a nasty tummy bug and it drained me of energy which, might explain why I was so exhausted yesterday. So it was rest and recuperation instead.

So in lieu of art, you get a photo post today for AEDM.

Do you ever get the feeling you're being watched? lol

Kya is actually sitting on an empty box that contained a vacuum cleaner that my son bought last week. I cut a hole out of it so she has herself a little cubby. She likes that she can watch me in the kitchen from this viewpoint. I will turn around and there is her little head looking over at me from the end of the dining table. She's so cute!

Kya loves when we buy things that come in big boxes, even huge boxes.

It is taboo to throw out a cardboard box if I think Kya might enjoy it first.
She will climb in and sleep for hours.

That goes for broken washing baskets too.
As you can see, she had this one shredded.
Yes, she made quite a mess everywhere but she loved it.

And that's about all for now...I'm still not feeling well.

Hopefully, I will be back tomorrow with the finished Puffin.

AEDM - Day 23 - Puffin - Work In Progress

Hi everyone,

It's been a crazy busy day and I'm feeling totally exhausted so, for today, I have only managed a very rough graphite sketch of a Puffin. I plan to finish him up for tomorrow.

Most mornings we go for a walk around the neighbourhood
so thought I'd share a few pics of things we've seen along the way.

A local flock of corellas like to play in the park as we pass by.
Corellas are a sub-genus of the Australian White Cockatoo.
Corellas look very similar — are smaller — and are missing the yellow crest.

The local council have already replaced the street lampshade once
as the corellas seem to be fascinated with pulling the cover off.
They unhinge it and then sit inside the light shade,
until it ends up falling to the ground.

Below is part of our walking path which runs alongside a creek.
Aaron is in front with his miniature poodle, Scarlett.
Brad following behind.

A wallaby took great interest in watching us cross the bridge.

A fallen nest possibly from a storm that had passed through
days earlier

And the beauty below was actually discovered in my sister's garden shed a couple of months back. My sons, Beau and Aaron, came to the rescue and removed the carpet snake and released it in bushland nearby.  He/she was a fairly decent size — you can compare it to part of the garden hose seen in the lower left side of the pic. Snakes are a protected species here in Australia and, while we have some of the most venomous snakes in the world here, carpet snakes are fairly harmless.

I will catch up again with fellow participants in the morning.
This tired old lady is off to bed.

AEDM - Day 22 - Pelican

I love all birds but Pelicans definitely rate in my top 3.

A couple of years ago, we got up in the wee hours to drive to The Spit at the Gold Coast to watch the sunrise — an hours drive there. I was so happy to see a pelican there early, most likely to catch his/her breakfast. Thought you might like to see some of the pics I took.

Below is the same pelican in the image above
after the sun had fully risen.
He/she let me get quite close.

I sketched a Pelican for AEDM today.

I did a rough freehand sketch with graphite pencil first,
then followed with watercolours and a bit of white gouache.

8 days to go!
It's going by quite quickly.
I will be back tomorrow with another sketch.
