AEDM - Day 11 - Remembrance Day

Hi everyone,

Today my choice of sketch was a little more serious being that it is Remembrance Day here in Australia.

Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the armistice that ended the First World War (1914 - 1918).  Australians observe one minute of silence at 11am on November 11th in memory of those fallen in all wars and armed conflict.

Bradley (my son) and I watched the ceremony on TV. As we have done for years, we stood for the minute of silence while the bugler was playing The Last Post — which is similar to the American Taps, I believe. The Last Post always makes me emotional as I think of all those lives lost in war.

I give my heartfelt and sincere thanks to all the people who serve in our armed services. You have my utmost respect.

LEST WE FORGET

So for today, I did an ink pen sketch of an Aussie Diggers hat, this particular design, worn by Australian soldiers since 1903.

It's origins date back to pre-1985, in Burma, where a very similar style was worn by the native police. At the time, Australian Lieutenant-Colonel Tom Price recognised its value for use in our own defence force. You can read more on that HERE.  It is sometimes called a Slouch hat or an Aussie Bush hat. The diggers' hats have a traditional Rising Sun badge which pins up the side brim of the hat.

  1. Beautiful Serena. Here the celebrations sadly have been curtailed due to the pandemic. It was so sad to watch the remembrance service this year. As there was no march past no veterans no public. It is really very sad as next year who knows how many veterans will be there.

  3. Your post is SO impressive, as is your beautiful and encouraging drawing. I love the poem, too. I had not heard it before, but I have heard The Last Post before. Such a fitting drawing of the hat and remembrance, too.
