More Inktober sketches

Hi everyone. Thanks for all the well wishes regarding my fall last week. My foot is pretty much better now and, in hindsight, my daughter and I believe it was actually a pinched nerve causing the severe foot pain that night. A couple of days rest and it was fine...so it could have been back/hip related after all.  My hand is still in a fair bit of pain when I try to carry out heavy tasks but that is to be expected with nerve and soft tissue damage.

Over the past week, I have been busy with daily sketching for Inktober.  I have been posting my sketches over on my Instagram feed if you want to see them daily as I don't get time to post here every day.

A meerkat sketched with water-soluble ink and then a water wash was applied.

This emu was sketched with permanent ink, then washed with water-soluble ink.
The eyes are done with ballpoint pens.
Getting the beak to look right was quite challenging.

This little cutie is called Teenie.
She is my Mum's pomeranian.
I sketched her with a Platinum Carbon pen and
ballpoint pens in suitable colours.
Then some white ink and a light wash of watercolour to finish.

A mirror selfie, sans-wrinkles.
Sketched with a Lamy Safari fountain pen
containing water-soluble ink.

Then a water wash applied with a brush.

I adore all animals but I admit to having a soft spot for pigs. This mother and baby sketch was prompted by my utter disgust at how the pigs were treated in Burlington, Ontario, recently when the truck taking them to slaughter rolled over.  The treatment of the injured pigs was nothing short of cruel and apathetic on the company's part.  Pleas from a local animal sanctuary's owner to take the injured pigs into sanctuary care went ignored and was even laughed at.  The poor, injured pigs were left to suffer for hours before being callously killed where they lay and then were unceremoniously dumped in a dumpster at the site. I hate how apathetic the human race has become. Did you know that pigs have the intelligence of a four year old child?  They are smarter than dogs and yet we get away with committing such atrocities against them.  It is so very wrong!

This is the initial pen sketch of a reference image on Sktchy.

I finished her with ballpoint pens in various colours
and a touch of white ink and watercolour to finish.

Yesterday, I was visiting with my Mum so didn't have a lot of time to sketch.
I managed a quick, loose pen sketch of some new inks I bought recently.
I used the ink colours to paint and spatter them with a brush.
Fun, fun, fun!

I'm linking up with Sunday Sketches again.

  3. You have done some wonderful work for Inktober. Your piggies are so sweet. Yes I do often wonder why people say we are evolved when we treat animals so atrociously.

    1. Thanks, Emma! Agreed, it's hardly evolved when we can behave so abominably to other sentient beings.

  5. You have such an amazing talent. I like them all, but especially the ink bottles. Love the ink splatters. They animate the image. I agree with your comments about the pigs. The are so smart, but factory farms treat pigs and cows so horrifically. Here in the US, there seems to be a little awareness happening, but I'm waiting and hoping for the day when all animals are treated humanely.

    1. Thanks, Barbara! :) I also liked the ink bottles because they somehow seemed more lively. I agree, that awareness is definitely happening among the public. Hopefully, the big companies in animal food industries will have to change their callous ways sooner rather than later.

  7. I think the driver of the flipped hauler is facing charges but can't remember for what. The whole thing was messed up, the pigs shouldn't hav suffered even if they were going to be killed anyway. they still should have been treated fairly and humanly.

its a very nice pig drawing :) wouldn't have thought it was done with pens, looks more like it was done with paint :)

    1. I hope he gets charged for his part in it all. The whole debacle was inexcusable, especially the way those injured pigs were treated with such apathy by the company.

The mother pig and baby were done mostly with ballpoint pens but I should have mentioned that I did add a very light wash of watercolour to just a couple of spots on their bodies which tied all the pen colours together. :)

  8. I'm glad your leg is better. Hope your hand is, too. It isn't worse since the fall, is it?
I love your sketches!! I didn't hear about the pigs, but it doesn't surprise me. The way animals are raised for food and treated is why I initially went vegetarian. Absolutely great sketches!! :) Have a wonderful week, my friend. :)

    1. I had only just said to Brad the day before my fall that my hand felt almost back to normal but then I fell and now it is very tender and sore, particularly if I move my hand a certain way. I feel like the fall has knocked me back to square one of healing. :(

Yes, I feel so happy that I'm vegan and no longer contribute to the suffering of animals in the food industries. Nowadays, they are treated like inanimate objects rather than sentient beings just like us. It's shameful.

I hope you have a lovely week too. xo

  9. What a wonderful drawings Serena,I love your art! In New Zealand more and more people are getting more aware of animal suffering in farming and more people buying free range eggs, chicken meat and free range pork, but we still have along way to go in animal welfare.

    1. Thanks, Marijke. Yes, we certainly have a very long way to go when it comes to exploiting and killing animals for our own use. :(

  12. So happy to hear you are getting better! Any fall is scary and I am just glad it was not worse. The meerkat is my favorite of these sketches because, well, it's a meerkat! :) I think they are the most anthropomorphic animal I know. I can't see one standing as such without picturing a little, flowing, colorfully robed outfit and cap on it. lol All the sketches are just lovely!! Happy Inktober!

    1. Thanks, Nicolas. Now you have me picturing the meerkat in a robed outfit and a cap. hehe I'm taking a class on Craftsy about illustrating animals in children's storybook illustrations. I will get around to watching the lesson videos one day. So many online classes that I need to catch up on.

      Have a lovely week!
