Sketches from my week

Thankfully, we had a little rain through the week which gave us a reprieve from the horrible heatwave temps.  The forecast says tomorrow's temperature will be 34°C/93.2°F — not quite heatwave temps but hot, nonetheless.  I know I'm a whiner when it comes to high heat and humidity but I can't help it. What can I say — I'm a winter gal at heart.

So, I have more pen sketches to share for Paint Party Friday.  To see the work of other participants for this week, click HERE.

I forced myself to be super-duper-fast when sketching the wheelie bins below. Loose, simple, and not a lot of detail. It happened to be 'bin collection day' hence my choice of subject. The yellow-lidded bin is for recycled stuff.

We often enjoy a healthy snack of Medjool dates and Brazil nuts.  Dates are high in potassium and Brazil nuts help lower cholesterol. I used to hate dates many years ago but then I discovered the fresh, fleshy Medjool dates and now, I'm hooked on dates.

Long-nose pliars are a must in my tool box. They have come in so handy over the years. Funny, in school we were taught to spell it as 'pliars' but now, 'pliers' seems to be the go. Which way do you spell it?

My son's folding white cane — an aide for the blind that he could not do without.

I ended up sick with asthma after last Sunday's heatwave temps so relied heavily on my inhalers. I'm doing much better now thanks to these babies.

I don't think I mentioned it but the results from my lung function test were good. No signs of emphysema so it seems that asthma could well be the reason for why my lungs showed as slightly enlarged on an X-ray and during the actual test. Phew!

It's been a busy week with appointments so I'm looking forward to a restful weekend.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend whatever you are doing.

  7. Hello Serena, I really enjoy seeing your different sketches. Love the dates especially, and, like you, I enjoy eating them... date scones are my favourite to make.
Glad for your good news re lung function test. Hope this heat lets up for all of you up there. Cheers :D)

    1. Thanks, Sue. We had some rain late yesterday and temps expected for today are 32°C — much cooler than the 42°C we had recently. :)

  8. Your daily sketches are amazing, everyday things looking so beautiful. I also learnt to spell pliars with an 'a', however, right here in blogger this is marked wrong - go figure. Dates - I still hate them. Maybe I should try fresh ones.

    1. OH I'm so glad that someone else learned to spell pliars with an 'a'! Do try the fresh ones because there is a big difference. The Medjool dates are particularly soft and fleshy. :)

  9. I'm glad you got some rain to take the edge off the heat a little. I completely understand your whining about the heat. I'm a Winter girl at heart myself, and anything above 25C will have me whining, especially since - like you - we don't have air conditioning.

It's amazing how much that white cane helps. Honestly, I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have mine. It not only acts as a way to see obsticles, but something about having it to "see" where I'm going helps me feel a bit more secure, if that makes sense. Bradley may understand what I'm saying.

That's great that it appears to just be asthma causing the problems with your lungs. Well, it's not great that the asthma is causing you problems, but it's great that it's not something worse.

    1. OH yes, a girl after my own heart when it comes to the heat. 25°C or lower is perfect!

That's exactly how Bradley feels about his cane too. Actually, we went somewhere the other week and he had forgotten to bring his cane in the car. Even holding onto me for guidance, he felt lost without it. It's amazing how much feedback the canes actually give.

I agree, I'd rather it be asthma than something more sinister.

Have a lovely week, Tori. xx

  10. Great post, Mum! Your sketch of the wheelie bins looks great, so does your sketch of the dates and Brazil nuts. I certainly enjoy snacking on them too. Great sketches also of the pliars and your asthma enhalers. To be honest, I've always been confused of the two ways of spelling pliars. Great sketch of my cane also! I seriously can't imagine myself without it nowadays. I remember before getting my first one, I was always looking at the ground, never really watching where I'm going. If I don't have the cane on me nowadays, I feel strange and I guess rather lost without it. I'm glad your lung function test went well. I'm glad its nothing worse than asthma. I'm with you when it comes to the heat, anything over 30 degrees is too hot, especially with the humidity hanging. Looking forward to Winter!

    Love Brad xoxo
