Scribble Picnic - Jars

The prompt for this week's Scribble Picnic is JARS.

My imagination wasn't coming to play at the picnic this week so I ended up just painting something from life...a jar from the pantry.

My son and I LOVE the Vegan Burrito bowls at Zambrero's Mexican restaurants. We adore the Verde sauce and always ask for an extra serve of it. For ages, I had tried to find somewhere that stocked Verde sauce to no avail. That is, until a recent visit to Zambrero's...

I almost did a happy dance right there in the store when I spotted jars of Verde Sauce on the shelf for sale! YES! They are now selling their sauces! I bought two jars of the Verde sauce right then and there...they're expensive but, oh so spicy and delicious!

Needless to say, Verde sauce was my subject for today's picnic.

A quick pen sketch to start with

About two layers of watercolour at this point

More layers and some penwork....almost done

Final result

I thought you might like to see another jar I painted earlier in the year

Michael Macvean is our wonderful host and, for next week's picnic, he has chosen the prompt - FOX. I look forward to seeing what everyone does for that one.

Have a great week!

  4. very nice jar sketches :) verde is green in french so the label is a good fit on the jar. mango and lemon tho, sounds like an odd mix.

got natural peanut butter last week, makes great peanut butter cookies :)

  6. Wow, Serena, both paintings are incredible. So well captured with yet your own artistic flair to their realness--the exact kind of watercolours I love. Great job on these. I think I have seen the PB one before but good to see again. You know what? I just didn't think Mexican made it all the way there to Australia, funnily enough. Growing up in UK, no one ever had Mexican but now, of course, ppl love it. It took me ages to enjoy it myself but now I love it too. That salsa sounds great. Yumm.

BTW, I saw that one comment on the bird post about your parents and replied but didn't see another. Was there one lost? Did you see my reply? Thank you. I would love to learn more!

Anyway, this is a wonderful contribution, as is the story behind it, Serena. Thank you so much!

  7. Your watercolors are awesome. Do you ever wonder how they come up with packaging art?

  8. Oh I just fell in love with your gorgeous watercolor jars Serena - you would definitely be an asset to any company requiring illustrations of their products - they would fly off the grocery shelves by the dozens!!!!!

Like Michael, I too had never tasted Mexican foods, especially salsas, when growing up in England. Now I love salsa and often make my own fresh versions which are of course quite nutritious. I would love that Verde with mango and lemon - may try making that combo. As for peanut butter - yuck, just have never liked it, again probably because we never had it as kids in England!
Beautiful art from your pens and brushes, thank you.
    Hugs - Mary
