A quick sketch in pen

My sketch journals have been calling to me for days now but I just hadn't managed the time to give them any attention.  Yesterday, I couldn't ignore the call any longer so I grabbed one of the magazines my Mum had left for me to read the other day and browsed the pages looking for something to draw.  I'm not comfortable drawing people but that's what I ended up sketching....practise makes perfect, right?   I am beginning to enjoy working without a pencil and I'm hoping it will help me loosen up a bit with my drawings.  Shading with pen is quite a challenge but I hope to improve on that too.  Too big a chin, nose too flat....it's far from perfect but I was happy that I had filled another page in my art journal and I really liked how the hair turned out.  I so want to get into the habit of daily drawing!

  4. I love that you're stretching yourself to do "pencil-free" drawings, Serena. Sounds to me almost like practicing trusting your intuition, experience, and skill as you draw, and knowing that everything will work out fine -- which is clearly the case! That hair is great, but I also was drawn to the eyes, the little wrinkle and the false eyelashes are perfectly done. :)

  7. I can't even imagine drawing without first making a light pencil sketch! This is amazing! I don't think there's anything wrong with the nose or the chin....and the hair is beautiful.

You will enjoy crocheting that baby blanket! I hope you show us when you're finished.

  9. Serena, just the thought of not penciling the face in first is frightening to me. You have done an amazing job. The shading is so well done. Very brave. You have reminded me to keep stepping outside my comfort zone, you never know where it will lead.

  16. OMGosh! You are so brave! Directly to pen! I am a coward where that is concerned--and afraid to try to draw people or animals because I am not skilled at it. You really did a wonderful job--including the shading. I can't imagine how good you will get if you practice every day. Awesome! The sketching seems to be really freeing for you. Glad you want to keep it up. So fun to see what you are doing in your sketchbook. :)
