Scribble Picnic - Buttons

The theme for this week's Scribble Picnic is BUTTONS BUTTONED (Amended)

I wasn't thinking of the traditional sew-on buttons but rather the buttons on remote control units. Namely, remote controls for garage doors.  This week, our Landlord replaced two of our ten year old, falling-apart, remote controls so we now have brand-spanking-new ones and they look pretty darned cool!

This is the first house we've had remote-controlled garage doors. I think back to a time when we used to have to get out of the car to unlock the roller door with a key, then manually open it. We're so spoiled nowadays.

So, I sketched the old and the new.  I love that the new remote has a slide to cover and protect the buttons when not in use.

I thought I'd also share an older sketch I did of 'Buttons' using mostly ballpoint pens and a touch of coloured pencil.

SO, it wasn't until I got to this point of my post that I realised I had misread Michael's prompt which was actually BUTTONED, not BUTTONS. Ooooops, sorry...

I will blame it on a pain-filled, cloudy-headed week. Thanks for all the caring words last week re. my illness etc. I received the results of last weeks X-ray and Ultrasound and it turns out that I have a torn Gluteus Medius tendon and Hip Bursitis. The most recent fall I had was at the local shopping centre back in October last year which makes sense because my hip started hurting in early November.  I just didn't tie the two together and put it down to my chronic back pain instead. I ended up having to go to the doctor because the pain was getting worse and I was developing a permanent limp.  Treatment is anti-inflammatory and pain medication, rest, and some physio...all recommended to avoid getting an Ultrasound Guided injection into my hip...sounds nasty, doesn't it?

On that note, I wish you all a happy week.

P.S. - Next week's prompt is FLOWER BED, right? hehe

  1. I had a glass vase that I used to keep all my buttons in... it was full. So, I particularly love your collection of blue buttons.

    1. Thanks, Latane...I keep all my spare buttons in a little jar with a hinged lid. So handy. :)

  2. I think your button pieces work well with the theme, those controls are 'buttoned' after all, and what could be more 'buttoned' than actual buttons, lol. So sorry to hear about all your pain, which comes with aging. My poor friend is having knee trouble.

    1. I never thought of it from that perspective...thanks, Christine! Aging can definitely have its setbacks. Arthritis tends to hit the weakest spots of the body, in my case, it's my back due to a bad fall I had back in 2003. My hip is arthritis-free, thank goodness. My knee is just compensating for the current hip issue. Hopefully, it will heal up quickly with the treatment. I can certainly sympathise with your friend. :)

  3. Buttons or buttoned....Both work I think. And both illustrations are great for the theme.

    1. Thanks, Wanda. I guess both do work...Christine gave me a different perspective so I'm glad I wasn't too far off the mark. :)

  4. Both your button illustrations are great. I would never have thought of drawing the remote buttons, genius!

Sorry to hear about your hip, having an injury like that affects just about everything you do. Hope the treatments work fast.

  5. ouch ouch ouch :( really hope physio works and you don't need an injection (ouch)

duh I never thought about remote controls, I could not think of anything for this week. your sketches are great and our garage doors open like stable doors, so have to get out of the car to open them

    1. I hope it works too, Jennifer...I heard too many horror stories about those cortisone injections.

Glad you like the sketches. I should have realised that re. the garage doors over there. My son and I are 'Escape to the Country' addicts and we adore the older style homes as well as the beautiful English/Scottish countryside. It always seems so lush and green.

  6. love your ball point pen drawings and the "architect" handwriting too. Hope now that the doctor found the reason for your pain and limp that your recovery is on its way.

  7. Congrats on your new garage control. Very clever take on the theme. And I love your button sketch in ballpoint and pencil. That is absolutely wonderful. Take care with the physio and don't push yourself too hard. I've had the injections and they did help, but if you can avoid them with the right exercise program to strengthen your hip that's great.

    1. Thanks, Lorraine. A CT scan has revealed even further issues with my back/spine. I hope to see a physio in the coming week. I definitely want to avoid the injection. :)

  8. LOVE the buttons!! New garage door opener is awesome, too, and great sketch. So sorry about your hip. I hope the medication and rest is helping. But you have to actually rest--LOL! ;) I know that is hard for you. Rest! Rest! (I finally started a letter.) Love and hugs!!

    1. Thanks, Rita. Yes...rest can be elusive, for sure. I am trying though.

Love and hugs to you, my friend. xo

  10. Serena,
I had exactly the same thought. Remote control buttons - but they made me feel "buttoned". lol :)
I love the sketch of the buttons with ballpoint pen and coloured pencil.

  12. Your ink buttons are beautiful! I went with buttons instead of buttoned also, but mine are quite plain and simple.
So glad you have a working remote for the garage door, especially with your hip troubles.

  13. Gosh, well Serena, at least you know the issue now and how to treat it! Wow. Hope it all gets better soon. So sorry.

Yes, I thought buttoned would be an interesting twist of otherwise it would be too easy jsut to draw buttons but as it is, your are lovely and I love the idea of showing remote controls. That's a totally unique take! Well drawn--both sets! Than you Serena.

BTw, Hip Bursitis sounds like some place in Africa, doesn't it? :)

  14. Great sketches, Serena. I've only sketched with a pen a handful of times. Quite intimidating and never have looked as good as yours. :) Wonderful illustrations! x

  15. These are great Serena.
Sorry about your pain but glad you now know what's causing it and can treat it. As for the guided injection - I had one of those a couple of years ago and it worked well and has put off any thought of back surgery, which will always be the last resort! I'm much older than you and have all sorts of things going on - getting old really is miserable. . . .but only if you let it be!
Good luck with your conservative treatment - and stay positive my dear.

  16. No ooops, needed ... I felt fully buttoned after looking at your sketches. I think the garage door opener was a great idea. It is one of those everyday things that we take for granted and you gave it a special place in your life ...if inanimate items had feelings it would be so proud :) Sorry about your "ouch". I did that many years ago ...fell and tore a ligament, but it didn't take a month for me to feel the pain. It took months for it to heal and (knock on wood) so far no problems since. Hope you are feeling better soon.

  17. Ooh that sounds so painful! My fingers are crossed that you are on the mend very soon... Meanwhile I love your sketches... and your new garage fob is exactly the same in every way to our own gate fob!
