sketches and drone delivery

This is the latest page spread from my pocket sketchbook.

I had sketched the pizza and garlic bread in ink on Saturday and, yesterday, I thought I'd sketch Liz Steel while watching her Live-stream from her Edges class. I took the class a few years back but, now and then, Liz does a run-through with her classes and the Live-streams are a great bonus. Liz is one of those teachers who goes the extra mile for her students. Great teacher, great personality. I enjoy her classes a lot.

Liz's Live-stream this morning showed her sketching a Stanley knife (box-cutter) and, seeing as how mine has been getting quite a work-out of late, I decided to add it to my page spread. We've been getting lots of deliveries over the past few months and this knife is my favourite tool for cutting the boxes into pieces for the recycle bin.

OH, and the following monstrosity is my foot. lol I'm giving myself some leeway here as I did this sketch in an almost dark room while we were watching a movie on TV. We like to watch movies with the lights off. The proportions are way out but it does resemble a foot at least.

After mentioning about drone deliveries in my last post, Aaron (youngest son) decided to give the service a try. He signed up and they offered a complimentary delivery of Tim-Tams (chocolate biscuits/cookies) - free of charge.

Order placed and we were told it would be just over 4 minutes for delivery. It actually arrived in just over 2 minutes. No kidding.

We'd had rain and it was a very cloudy, dull day so please forgive the dull photos.

And here it comes...

It arrived overhead and we could see the package tucked up under the belly of the drone.

The drone lowered the package.

Below - The eagle has landed!

The drone automatically unclipped the package,
wound up the cord and flew away.
This process only took seconds from the time of its arrival.

Here is a close-up of the package.
Tim-Tams AND a bottled water inside.

We were impressed with how fast the service was. This has been our only drone delivery so far and I wouldn't rule out any more. Our neighbours a few doors up have been getting drone deliveries also. Surprisingly, the drone was not as loud as I thought it would be.

I love when Kya curls up in a doughnut shape beside me.
Too cute!

The Delta strain of Covid has been identified in Australia, via people returning from overseas and in quarantine. Some areas in NSW are in lock-down and Queensland is now on restrictions where masks are mandated for 2 weeks. We have already been social distancing, sanitising, and using QR codes at cafes/restaurants. Hopefully, this strain won't spread any further but we may face a lock-down also if any new cases arise in the community.

Stay safe everyone,

    1. Thanks, Christine. It will be interesting to see if drone deliveries become popular. At the moment, it's quite the novelty. x

    1. I don't think that would happen in Australia but maybe in the States. We have had older people complaining about the noise but, seriously, these drones truly aren't that noisy — they drop the package and are literally gone in seconds. I get a kick out of seeing them in the sky. :)

  3. Hands and feet are so hard to sketch and get all the details in. I think you did a great job. And I am really fascinated by this drone delivery. And it came so quickly. I'm glad you shared this. It was a fascinating read. Hugs-Erika

    1. Thanks, Erika...yes, hands and feet aren't the easiest subjects to sketch. I'm glad you enjoyed hearing about the drone delivery.

  4. I enjoyed seeing the pizza and the box cutter. You are a great artist. And your foot is nicely done, too. Much better than I could ever do.

I was impressed to see the drone delivery. It's amazing. I suspect it would be much better in rural areas or the suburbs than in big cities. I doubt it would ever take off where I live. But I was truly impressed with the speed to which it took the order and arrived. That is amazing.

    1. Thanks, Elizabeth.

I don't think drone delivery would work too well in the big cities either. It would be mayhem.

    1. Thanks, Rita. It was a treat to get the drone delivery. I can see where drones would be handy if you're about to start baking/cooking and you realise you're missing one important ingredient. You can get it delivered in minutes without having to leave the house.

  7. Serena,

You're such a talented artist. I think it's really cool how you keep an art journal. There are others who do this sort of thing and I think that would be awesome to do but then I never do anything about it. Oh well, I'm content to doodle in art pad when the mood strikes but I love using my iPad a lot, too. I've heard of drone deliveries but I didn't know how that worked exactly. That's pretty cool to know. Good common sense is going to keep one healthy during these days of uncertainty and it sounds like y'all are making wise decisions. I believe Covid is going to be with us like the flu. It's going to change and scientists won't be able to wipe it out no matter how much they want to but we can't be afraid either. Just take necessary precautions to keep oneself well. Saying prayers that this new strain miraculous fizzles out!

    1. Thanks, Cathy.

I've kept illustrated journals for many years. I love looking back through them from time to time.

I agree that Covid will be with us just like the flu is and I believe we will most likely have booster jabs each year to cope with mutating strains just like the flu. Precautions and common sense are a good way to go.

  11. Such an interesting post Serena. I enjoyed your new sketches and that box cutter -especially. Also I'm so glad you posted all the photos of the drone and description. I still haven't remembered to check to see if drone shipping is a thing here or not.
