Goodbye to our precious boy, Jack

This year has been a tough one in more ways than one. I lost my fur-kid and best-friend, Cody, in February after a battle with Cushing's Disease. Then my LARS hip tendon surgery was in early May of which I'm now halfway through the recovery period of ten months. This was followed by Bradley's wisdom teeth removal surgery in June. I then came down with a severe chest infection that was very painful and debilitating which took two months to recover from. We then learned that my sister-in-law (ex-husband's sister) passed away on August 27th which came as quite a shock. Colleen was only a year younger than me. I still can't get my head around it. Cancer sucks!

Then on October 2nd, we said a very sad and tearful goodbye to our last little doggy, Jack. He was around 14 years old, 90% blind, had bad teeth and arthritis among other things, and he was suffering. We knew it was time but it was still a hard decision to make nonetheless.

Jack found his way to our door on my Dad's birthday back in September of 2010. I had been preparing for my daughter's upcoming wedding on October 2nd which turned out to be the date on which Jack passed away 9 years later. Jack was severely malnourished and riddled with fleas and ticks. I also felt Jack had suffered abuse to some degree because he became very fearful whenever voices were raised. He was also favouring his rump area which was very stiff. I remember wondering if he'd been kicked hard and/or injured. The vet felt the same. Jack had no microchip which made it near impossible to find his owner. We asked around, notified local vets and visited pet shops, leaving our details just in case but it was all to no avail. In the end, we figured we would keep him as the vet had advised. We didn't want him ending up at the high kill shelter because they give them only three days to be collected before they put them to sleep.

So Jack was then micro-chipped and officially became a much loved member of our family. The vet estimated his age to be between 4 and 6 years old which meant he was around 14 years old when he passed. He bonded quite well with Cody too.

Jack had clearly been an outdoor dog in his previous home as he was not house-trained. He learned quickly thanks mostly to watching Cody. I remember that Jack loved to play tug 'o war in his younger years. He would pick up a toy and continually nudge it into someone's leg until they played with him. He was also known as the 'squeak destroyer' because he would destroy every squeaker toy within seconds of getting it. Poor Cody loved his squeaker toys too and we did try to keep Jack away from Cody's favourite ones but we usually lost the battle.

Jack was clearly a Jack Russell terrier/Shih-Tzu mix, hence his name, and like the breed in general, he was very territorial. In his eyes, no other dogs, or people for that matter, were allowed to walk past our house even if they were on the opposite side of the road. He would bark and carry on like they were a threat to his home and family. Cody soon followed suit and we then had two barking maniacs whenever they spotted other dogs or people, and even cars parking, in view of our house.

Jack tended to be an all round family dog until the last five years of his life when he started to follow my eldest son, Bradley, around. He would even sleep in Bradley's room every night. He became Bradley's shadow as Cody had been mine. Jack definitely classified himself as Bradley's best friend and vice versa. He would even stand outside Brad's door waiting patiently to go in. He will be greatly missed, that's for sure.

Dearest Jack,
Thank you for all the many special moments you gave us. We were blessed to have you in our lives. No doubt, you are now running free of pain with your 'brother', Cody. We love you both so much and know that neither of you will ever be forgotten. Our hearts are forever stamped with your names. I hope to see you again some day. xo

Forever in our hearts

“A dog has no use for fancy cars, big homes, or designer clothes. A water logged stick will do just fine. A dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he'll give you his. How many people can you say that about? How many people can make you feel rare and pure and special? How many people can make you feel extraordinary?” — John Grogan

Scribble Picnic - Fill in the blank

Hello fellow Scribble Picnickers,

I've had a pretty rough day...feeling unwell and having to take medication to ward off a pending migraine. I'm a little foggy-headed as I type this so please forgive any errors.

This week's prompt was a 'fill in the blank' —

I've enjoyed working with the tan-toned paper for INKtober so thought I'd use it for today's sketch as well. Castles kept coming to mind so that's what I went with. Sketched with a Platinum Carbon fountain pen and coloured with a mix of INKtense and Prismacolor pencils. I was channeling well known Urban Sketcher - Pat Southern Pearce.

And a laugh for today —

Those who follow my blog regularly will know that Jack, our Jack Russell/Shihtzu, detests having a camera or smart phone pointed in his direction. Well, yesterday, I caught him watching me, and he looked so darned cute that I had to try. Poor little man is blind in his left eye (cataracts and age) so he didn't realise what I was up to at first and I managed to actually get a fairly decent shot of him.

Within literally two seconds, he spotted my phone and was on the move...a blur!  THIS is what most of Jack's photos are like. haha

I will post more INKtober sketches tomorrow so stay tuned...

Doggies in jumpers and a couple of sketches

It's the time of year that I love  here in Brissie

WINTER!

The boys are already enjoying their jumpers.

As part of my homework in Roz Stendahl's Sketchbook Skool klass,
I loosely sketched Cody
while he was curled up beside me on the couch yesterday.
I snapped this photo today when he wasn't wearing his jumper.
Medium - Pentel Pocket brush pen, PITT pens, gouache and watercolour
Paper - Moleskine A6 pocket sketchbook

I attempted this sketch using a Pentel pocket brush pen
which wasn't too successful as it's very difficult to get fine lines.
I rescued the sketch as best I could using gouache and some finer PITT pens.
His ear looks a little pink in this photo but it's not in the actual sketch.
I LOVE GOUACHE!

More on Roz's klass later.....

This is a sketch I did in April that I forgot to post at the time.
Medium - Faber Castell PITT pens
Paper - Moleskine A5 pocket sketchbook

#62 of 75 pen/ink sketches

Daily blogging seems to be a habit I can't break at the moment.

What the......??

This morning, I woke up at 5am, and it was already quite hot and humid.
Yesterday was like a sauna and I felt so sorry for Cody and Jack.
Their coats weren't over-long since I'd clipped them a couple of months ago
but there was definitely enough length to make it an uncomfortable day for them.
So by 6am, I was scissor-trimming Cody, followed by Jack.
I figured I'd get it out of the way before the real heat of the day set in.
Wise move!

I ended up sending the cheap electric pet trimmers back for a refund.
They just didn't do the job properly.
Michelle bought the same set and was of the same opinion.
I am pleased that the company stood by their word and
were very quick paying the refund back into my Paypal account.

For my sketch today,
I chose one of the combs I use while I scissor-cut.
They are very handy for holding the hair in place and
also act as a protection shield while I use the scissors.
No dogs were cut on my watch. ;)

By the way,
the first image is SOME of the fur I shook off in the yard
from the table protector cloth I used. ;)

Pencil-free sketch in A6 Moleskine pocket sketchbook
using BIC Pro pen and a wee touch of Micron pen.

I hope you're all having a lovely weekend.

Flowers, dogs and a sketch!

Yes, I changed back to my previous template.
I am missing the Dynamic Views template terribly but, unfortunately, it is too limiting at this point in time for what I want to achieve with my blog.  Hopefully, Blogger will offer more options sooner than later.

My Bird of Paradise is in bloom!

I spotted another bee so moved in for a macro shot.
I was very close but I wasn't afraid and managed to snap away without being stung.

My Desert Rose (Adenium Obesum) is also flowering. YAY!
I LOVE this potted succulent!!
To think that I nearly gave up on it because, for quite a few years, it didn't seem to grow or bloom at all.  Then, a couple of years ago, I re-potted it and, from that point on, it took on a new lease of life.  It thrived AND started flowering!!  It's been growing well ever since.

Here was Cody and Jack catching a spot of sunshine the other morning.
It's like they know Vitamin D is good for us.
Clever doggies!

I have indeed been sketching a little.

First a rough graphite outline in my large Moleskine sketchbook -

Followed by more detail using Pigma Micron pens and it's all finished -

That about wraps up another post from little, old me.

I've had a few rough days health-wise...I'm not sure that the antibiotics are agreeing with me. :(

Anywhoo, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!
