AEDM - Day 3 - Crabby

Hi everyone, 

I didn't start out crabby when I started this piece because I thought it was going to be a fairly simple sketch. My plan was to do a plain black and white crab but, as I worked on it, I decided to add colour and more detail. What I thought was going to be a quick and easy sketch turned into a more complex one,   thanks to my obsession with detail. So that made me a little crabby with myself.

 

I wasn't at home most of the day either because we popped over to visit my Mum. Then, when we dropped my sister home, we stayed for a cuppa before heading home. My other son visited late afternoon and, when he left, it was time to sort dinner.  It's been a pretty full-on day and not much time to sketch. 

So this crab sketch is a work-in-progress. 

I will finish him tomorrow and post pics.

For now, this is as far as I got 

I will journal the days events into the blank area when completed

AEDM - Day 2 - Giraffe Planter

Hi everyone, 

It feels great to be sketching again. I hope I can keep it up. 

Today, I decided to sketch my ornamental Giraffe Planter. 

First I did a freehand sketch in graphite before applying watercolours. I made the nose a little too long but that's okay.

AEDM 2020 - My Octopus Teacher

Hi everyone, 

In recent weeks, my son and I watched a Netflix documentary - My Octopus Teacher - which was so lovely. It was a heartfelt story following film maker, Craig Foster, over the course of a year where he connected with an octopus in the kelp forests off the coast of South Africa. He shows just how clever and intelligent these beautiful beings are.  It was heart-stopping in areas and quite emotional in others. I did cry but definitely worth watching.

So, I thought I'd sketch an octopus for the first day of Art Every Day Month. 

I sketched this beauty with a mix of ink, watercolour, and Prismacolor pencils in a Holcroft A5 sketchbook.

On another note, we had a super storm cell move through our area yesterday leaving a fair bit of damage in its wake.  A tennis ball-sized hailstone landed across the street from us but the majority of hailstones were around 1½" in diameter (the larger one in the pic below). Some areas reported hailstones the size of cricket balls! And, to think, we are only in spring. The worst of our summer storms usually hit in January/February. 

I guess we won't know if the roof sustained any damage until we have more rain. Damp bubbling spots on the ceiling are usually a clue. I hope that doesn't happen.
