Day 18 - AEDM & Nablopomo - cody, inktense & plumbago

it will by a quick post tonight because the boys are anxiously waiting on me so we can watch 'harry potter and the deathly hallows - part 1'. they are hoping to watch 'part 2' straight after so we need to get an early start.

so today i decided to do a quick sketch of my dog, cody
he is a chihuahua/shih-tzu/maltese cross

i started out with a pencil free sketch using a pigma micron pen

then followed up with some colour using my derwent inktense pencils

then the final details and some words

cody turned FIVE on november 10th!
the poor thing suffers severe separation anxiety if i go out and that's even if my sons are at home. he's terrified of storms and loud noises too. i feel so bad for him.  he's like my baby and he follows me everywhere. i love him so much!

i also did some swatches in my sketchbook for my derwent inktense pencils.

it's not easy to judge what colour a pencil is going to deliver just by looking at it so i figured the swatches will be a great reference.

  1. Cody is so cute, Serena! I love it's colour and I just can't stop staring at his cute puppy face. :-) Oh, and ofcourse, your swatches are so nice to look at. I am tempted to buy a set of derwent inktense pencils!!! :-)

    Happy Friday, Serena.

  2. I love how your little dog needs you so much. This is such a beautiful sketch. Is this him watching you whilst you work in your sketch book; peering over the page?

  3. Oooooh I love this, you did fabulous. I'm in awe. I keep thinking of drawing my Sweep but I know I won't be able to do him justice so avoid it. Aww bless cody, he's such a cute pup, he's lucky to have you to look after him, thanks for sharing x

  5. I admire your talent and what you can do with a pen with no erasing!!
Your Cody sounds like a little sweetheart too :)

  6. this is such a sweet way to capture Cody's essence. and your rendering is impressive as well as touching.

my best friend and constant companion is Gracie Mae, my six [and a half] year old Golden. I must have a million photos of her and most are such great grins. I have zero capacity to draw her, so I have learned to keep taking pictures of her.
p.s. I love how you celebrate Cody's birthday AND how I manage to slip in Gracie's "half" age, just like they are kids.

  10. Cody... a chihuahua/shih-tzu/maltese cross... TOO CUTE!! Your sketch of him is so full of character and fun. Your pencil swatches is a good idea. The plumbago is lovely--the clear blue is so cheerful. I like this old-fashioned flower. Happy Days :o)

  12. What a cutie patootie that Cody is! I'm always amazed at how you whip up a drawing. Something I wish I could do. :)

I forgot the last Harry Potter movie is out! I'll have to watch that. I still enjoy the books a wee bit more.

    Warmly,

    Tracy

  16. Cody is precious! And I know he is a great companion for you. Jingles is afraid of anything black -- she freaks out when she sees anything dark colored. So crazy! A quiet day here. Just what I needed. Ankle starts getting sore in the afternoon but is better than it was several days ago. Hope you have a super Saturday. :) Tammy

  18. Cute drawing. Our pups are so special.

I did a color swatch too for my colored pencils. You are right, you can't always tell how they will look on paper just by looking at them.

  19. Cody is so cute and you did a great drawing of him.

I hope you enjoyed the movies. Did you make it through both of them?

  20. I love your drawing of Cody. He sounds a little like my Chloe who is afraid of everyone yet is very very stubborn. She has been really challenging but yet she makes us laugh all of the time.

Your sketch was great with just the right amount of color.

  21. Hi Serena, I love this sketch of Cody he just pops right off the page, I have inktense pencils and I love them, they are so versatile I think your swatches are a fantastic idea!! I also loved your daffodil in your previous post! Lovely! :0)

I haven't visited in a while and it was so nice to see your daughter Michelle's baby room and to hear that your granddaughter is well :0) I was wondering if Michelle is creating again as I remember she had a fabulous blog and I loved her work too!? :0)

  22. Happy birthday to Cody! Karma is going to be seven in February! How the time flies! I love the sketch of Cody. Those Intense colors are great! They look like they blend well. Making swatch samples is a good idea, too. :)

I keep saying this--I am amazed by the plant life in Australia! That is another gorgeous flower!

Hope you enjoyed the movies!! :)

  26. Cody and Mushu are brothers for sure as he hates loud noises and storms and being alone... he is curled up on the lounge with Phantom at the moment... they are just too adorable for words aren't they.... that is such a great drawing of him... love the plumbago... the fence across the road is covered in it xx

  27. I love plumbago, what a treat to see that as we are well into fall now and no flowers around. Your pooch is adorable!! I really enjoyed the sketch and the composition is wonderful!

  28. Happy belated birthday to Cody!

Kero's the same. We do finally have him to a place where he can now manage to be left with others, and we've found some natural dog treats that make him dopey enough that he doesn't have the energy to panic about fireworks and storms, but it's a new thing, and he's now 7!

  29. Great sketch Serena, your dog is so cute.
I love your colour swatch pages, great idea for future reference. I would love to have a book full of all the colours of the mediums I use, I'm sure it would make life easier when selecting colours. mmmmm maybe a holiday project over Christmas.
Never seen a plumbago flower before, such a gorgeous blue!
