Day 27 - AEDM & Nablopomo - Chinese garden lantern

Hi everyone!

WOW! Day 27 which means only THREE more days to go! The month has gone by very fast, ailments and all.

My lower back pain was even worse today. It only allowed me short periods of time at the computer or sitting in general. I will most likely be getting a back scan some time this week.

Anywhoo, today, I decided to sketch a Chinese Garden Lantern which was prompted by the fact that I bought a new shrub for our back corner garden. I went for an Orange Jessamine shrub which is very similar to Jasmine with its little white flowers. We have these shrubs in the front garden bed and, when they are in bloom, the fragrance wafts in through the windows. I love it!

I've always liked the look of these Chinese lanterns in gardens. I don't own one but it is on my wish list.

This was a pencil-free sketch using Pigma Micron pens and Derwent Inktense pencils for colour...oh, and a Uniball Signo white pen for highlights. I liked using the double page format so much yesterday that I went with the same idea today.  It's in my Moleskine pocket watercolour sketch book.

It was a very hot and humid day...a clear reminder that summer is only days away.  I know I'm in the minority when I say that I prefer our cooler months but that's how I feel.  I hope tomorrow will be a little cooler.

~ Love, light and peace ~

  1. Gorgeous! I can imagine how relaxing it would be to sit next to the Chinese lantern with a light glowing from inside it and smelling the fragrance from the shrub. A lantern like you've drawn would be a lovely addition to your garden!

  4. Hi Serena,
Thanks so much for your comment today. Your sketches are absolutely FABULOUS!! Oh my goodness, you are really talented! And pencil-less too. That is a great thing to do because you have to just go for it and not depend on the eraser. Great work!!!

I love this spread, too. I have never seen a Chinese garden lantern and will now have to google that--LOL! I hope you get one someday. And I hope it is cooler today. I am with you and preferring the colder to the hotter weather. Not that popular up here, either--ROFL!

I'm just amazed at how you've kept up with your AED project through it all. I'm so enjoying your sketches and especially the inktense pencils...have to get me some of those for when I go away this winter! Sending you lots of love and healing thoughts dear friend. (yes, the scan sounds like a good idea).

  18. I love your drawings combined with your journal notes. Sorry to hear you're in pain, hope that can be resolved. Bunnings? Does that mean you are in Oz? I lived in Sydney for the last 4 and a half years before moving to Munich in July. Must admit I like the cooler weather in Europe.
