Day 2 - AEDM & NABLOPOMO - sketch

i decided to do a quick sketch of the lantana mandala i photographed yesterday

so, out came my small moleskine watercolour sketchbook, my pigma micron pens, some felt pens (textures) and watercolour crayons.  i sketched directly in pigma micron pen and followed up with the felt pens before moving on to watercolours.

i tried to keep it very loose

and i was fairly pleased with the end result

considering i rushed it due to lack of time this afternoon

a couple more lantana photos for inspiration

hard to believe that, in queensland, these shrubs are viewed as noxious weeds

Oh my gosh! WOW! Look at the vivid, beautiful colors you used! I just saw lantana for the first time when I took a trip out east in September with my daughters. The colors - both in your drawing and photograph - so accurately capture the beauty of the flowers. Seeing your work brought back some wonderful memories of the trip. Thank you!

I love lantana--and this is really amazing! You have such a pretty handwriting, too. I'm always afraid I'll mess up the page with mine :)

I love your handwriting, too. It makes me smile because it says so much about you. You're a fun person, obviously. And the beautiful lantana picture, just lovely!

Noxious weeds? You gotta be kidding me! Send some my way. I'd love to plant them all over this country. We need something noxious over here besides the people and the garbage. Ha! I love your drawing! It is absolutely gorgeous. Sure doesn't look rushed to me. Have a great rest of the week. Tammy P.S. Your website is fabulous. Loved being able to see your artwork and journals laid out in such an organized manner. Good job!

I could just about hear all my various art teachers saying--"Loose! See! Like this! Loose! See how expressive and vibrant this is?" ;) I envy you your looseness. ROFL!

Absolutely gorgeous, Serena! What brand of watercolor crayons did you use for the color? And what brand of colored pens are those? Always curious, you know. ;)

I can't believe these are considered weeds. They are beautiful--exotic! Your sketch is amazing! Can hardly wait to see what else you will be up to this month. :):)

I saw these pictures through my feeds and thought I had never seen a flower like that. Fast forward two hours, let me take a different road home and ... yes, the same flower in my own neighbourhood! Super cool.
Lovely sketch & colouring.

Hi Serena,
What a wonderful job for a quickie! lol
Soft and loose you've achieved.
Yes, hard to believe they are noxious weeds.
Creative hugs,
Anna

Gorgeous sketch, Serena,I love the colours! Wow, a noxious weed? We have two of these as standard plants in pots and last year they attracted a hummingbird moth!I love the way the colours blend from red to yellow and the smell of the leaves is quite nice too. Funny how we think some plants are weeds when they are so beautiful!

Hi Mum,

That's a great sketch you did of Lantana Mandala, it looks really great! It's hard to believe it was rushed doing it. The other two photos here are also very nice!

Love Brad!

AH! You just took my breath away! That is beautiful! I absolutely love those colors. My favorite color combinations are either blue and green or fuschia, orange, and golden yellow. You pretty much covered them all in one wack! I'm very impressed by your loosness. I am the opposite. My hands shake so I can't use pens most of the time. I like to stick to pencil and I have to brace my hand on the page to steady it so pens are hard but I do love the look of ink filled in with watercolor. I try it whenever I call - like with my Christmas Zentangles.

I remember lantana from my childhood on days when I would visit my grandmother, I always loved the little clusters of flowers. I think it is a weed in Victoria too.
Great idea to draw the flower head as a mandala.
